Dear Friend,

If you regularly seek out smart, independent music,
If you like honest songwriting and passionate performances,
If you think music shouldn’t be just blues, folk or rock n’roll,
If you listen to remember, to celebrate, or to love...

I’d like you to hear Testing the Water.

Testing the Water is life at its most tender, passionate and sometimes painful - written and performed by songwriter Greg Hyde.

It’s music for being alone...or with another person - music for the early morning...or for late night drives.

Get Ready to Remember, Celebrate and Love. . .

If your idea of great music is a little different from what you hear on the radio today - songwriting that’s intelligent and expressive -sweet, sexy, smart - and not just radio-friendly but listener-friendly too - if you’re looking for deeply personal music that has the power to really move you - Testing the Water is for you.

The 14 songs on Testing the Water are catchy, but not in the way you think. You’ll be tapping your feet one moment ... singing along the next ... moved to quiet reflection with one song... deeply moved with another. The words and music stay with you, both the thoughtful, sometimes poignant lyrics and the simple-but perfect acoustic accompaniment. And best of all, you’ll have discovered original songwriting that makes honest sense of the true passions and real disappointments we all see in life.

Artist Bio

When Greg attended Pasadena High School in Southern California, he was writing songs and singing in a band and playing jazz, rock and roll and folk rock. He was inspired by music groups at the Ice House in the 60’s. At Claremont McKenna College, he wrote songs for his senior thesis (graded by one of the band members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and recorded them on a Sony 2 track reel to reel in his room. While there, his band was on stage with Steppenwolf and in the RCA recording studio; while next door at RCA, Grace Slick was putting on the final touches to one of the tracks on a Jefferson Airplane record album.

After college, as the Viet Nam war raged, he attended service in the US Army Medical Service Corps in Texas and in Monterey, California where he met his wife-to-be. After finishing his obligation, he and Dixie were married in Pacific Grove, where they raised a family and lived for 10 years.

Pacific Grove is right next to Monterey, Carmel and Pebble Beach - a beautiful place to live. While here, Greg continued writing songs and composed and recorded in a converted garage studio he built for that purpose. In the 90’s he turned back to performing his music live at local coffee shops and there met Chaz Shropshire, with whom he played locally and they started going to open mic’s in Pacific Grove at a place called “Juice and Java” on Forest and Lighthouse Avenue.

There he also met poet, bill collector, wit and commedian, Mark Gurley. Since their sense of humor and the world was on the same low level, they became mutual supporters of the creative word; co-wrote the song, “Cool Guys” and collaborated on several performances together. Mark agreed to produce the CD “Testing the Water” after he learned of Greg’s library of over 150 songs that were sitting around in notebooks on the dining room table. Mark is author of the book of poetry “Salinas Blues”.

A few other veterans of the open mic nights eventually got together as an “olio” group and they played local vineyard events as two of the “Scruffy Old Men”. Mark would read his poetry accompanied by Greg on guitar, and then Jim “Shake” Sanchez or Bruce Miller would play their style of banjo or country music.

In 2003, Greg attended a songwriter conference in Big Sur, California, sponsored by Brett Perkins. There he and other singer/songwriters spent several beautiful days in the woods co-writing songs and having a grand time, confirming that music and song writing were indeed an integral, if not profitable part of his life.

Greg is a full time web site designer, videographer and video editor and has his own business, Assimilated Multimedia in his garage.

PS. Songwriters are again gathered in Big Sur this weekend, Feb 19th 2005 and will be at the Henry Miller Library Saturday night for another concert. If you are in the area, check it out.
